Medical advisory
Hantatracker is an aggregated information service for the public, journalists and researchers. It is not a clinical decision tool and does not provide medical advice. If you have symptoms consistent with Hantavirus exposure, contact a qualified healthcare provider or your national health authority. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Methodology
Every six hours we run an ingestion pipeline that queries each upstream source, deduplicates records by URL or unique outbreak signature, normalises country and region names, and attaches geographic coordinates. AI-assisted normalisation extracts a one-sentence summary and a structured location for each news article; case data is taken verbatim from the upstream source and only ever supplemented, never invented.
Aggregate metrics — total cases, deaths, case fatality rate (CFR), countries affected, and active outbreaks — are computed at read time from the consolidated database. Because reporting completeness varies by country and over time, these metrics should be read as indicators of activity rather than precise epidemiological estimates.
Data sources
-
World Health Organization (WHO) — Disease Outbreak News
Authoritative outbreak notifications and country-level risk assessments.
Polled every 6 hours
-
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — Hantavirus surveillance
Confirmed case counts and surveillance reports for the United States.
Polled every 6 hours
-
NewsAPI — international news index
Real-time news mentions used to surface emerging clusters before official reporting.
Polled every 6 hours, deduplicated by URL
Editorial standards
- Every record links back to its primary source. We do not paraphrase original case counts.
- News summaries are clearly labelled as AI-generated and a human moderator can hold or remove any item.
- If an upstream source retracts or revises a number, our value updates on the next ingestion run.
- We disclose when an outbreak is "emerging" (low confidence) versus "active" (multiple confirmed sources).
